4/3/02 Pharmacia to Buy AT&T's HQ

4/2/02 New Jersey Lagging in Internet Use

Pharmacia reportedly plans to announce its acquisition of AT&T's former Basking Ridge headquarters for $215 m., according to sources quoted by the Star-Ledger.

Pharmacia, the world's eighth-largest drug maker, would sell its current Peapack headquarters, which is unable to accommodate all of the company's 2000+ employees, and has no room for further growth. (Source: NJ Star-Ledger)

The growth of Internet use in New Jersey is failing to keep pace with that in the rest of the country, according to a story in April 2nd's Newark Star-Ledger.

Attributed to a survey by Yahoo! Internet Life, the story reports that other regions have jumped past New Jersey in every category from the growth of broadband access to the provision of government services on the net. "The Middlesex-Hunterdon-Somerset region, a standout at No. 10 last year, came in 28th this year," according to the report.

The story stressed that it's not that New Jerseyans are using the net less, but that other states are moving forward at a faster rate. Despite the decline in Internet stock valuations, net usage is steadily increasing in every measurable aspect. (Source: NJ Star-Ledger)

3/24/02 Local Companies Offered Loans, Resources, New Opportunities

Our third "Networking Plus" event, sponsored by the Somerset Hills Hotel, featured a brief presentation on the power of networking that brought a lot of laughs and created a warm, friendly atmosphere in the room. "Members Offered $Millions, Maybe Even $Billions" was our original headline, referring to the statements (some humorous) made by representatives of several financial institutions attending the meeting. It would seem they are currently in an aggressive lending mode and rates are still quite low (but may be heading higher if the economy picks up as expected by many financial analysts and economists). It might be a good time to talk to them if you are in need of financing.

Below is the listing of the 40 people from 31 different companies who attended the meeting. We had another good turnout (especially considering the competing events going on this morning) including lots of new faces. Continue to invite new people to future meetings and we will grow.

Printouts of the members' profile pages from the Web site were prominently displayed and attracted a lot of attention. Again we saw a number of people exchanging leads and heard a lot of positive feedback. Please keep us informed of the new business you are generating from the meetings. Also let us know if you have any suggestions to improve things. Next month we will have handouts listing those who notify us they will be attending the meeting.

Meanwhile our goal is to keep asking our members what they want and need, and what resources we can provide. Please send us your feedback.

Attendee List
Nancy Geiser (Access Self Storage), Lee Esposito (Andrew Personnel Service, Inc., Associate Member), Kurt Jansen (Associates by Creative Design), Kathleen Mulvaney (Coldwell Banker Realtors), Bill & Lauren Schoonover (Couples Counseling Center), Robert van Wettering (Envision Technologies, Inc.), Jorge Ocasio (Excalibur Computer Services), Allen Lewis & Matthew Northup (Financial Solutions, Inc., Associate Member), Victoria Zelin (Generative Leadership Group), Mona Hennes (Hennes Illustration & Design), Rikki Abrahams (HQ Global Workplaces - Bedminster, Charter Member), Michael Reno (HQ Global Workplaces - Bridgewater, Charter Member), Joanne Korte (Hunter Green Associates), Frank Rosato (International Planning Alliance), David Russo (International Planning Alliance), David Kotz (Merrill Lynch), John Blum (Morgan Stanley), Scott Miller (Odds 'N Errands), Jonathan Cloud & Marty Sobin (Online Trading Company, Inc., Founding Member), Robert Buckely & LeeAnn Hunt (Peapack-Gladstone Bank), Brenda Klumpp & Barbara Murphy (Prism Placement Services), Michael Blake (Pro Form Printing, Inc.), Dave Dabreau (Proactiv Marketing), John O'Connor (Shade Tree Garage), Phyllis Faust, Michael Moussa, Londa Narmita (Somerset Hills Hotel, Charter Member), Jeff Mattison (Somerset Valley Bank), Helen Thomas (Technology Partner), Pat Brightman (The Chelsea at Warren), Nancy Fukushima (The Inn at Somerset Hills, Charter Member), Norman Lovas (Three Can Enterprises), Andrew Tupler (Tupler Financial), Jamie Nicholas (WJN), Charles Wasilewski (Words and Son).

A special thank you to The Somerset Hills Hotel for hosting our meeting. General Manager Geoff Conrad has been an early supporter of the Somerset Hills Business Network and his people Nancy Fukushima (Director of Room Sales), Londa Narmita (Sales Manager), and especially Phyllis Faust (Conference Sales Manager) went out of their way to help make the meeting a success. Keep them in mind when you need hotel rooms in the area, meeting or event space, or just a place to have a fine meal. A number of members said they had previously used the hotel's facilities and recommended the hotel highly.
