11/27/02 Successful Event at Sunrise Assisted Living

Over 65 people attended the November 22nd meeting at Sunrise Assisted Living of Basking Ridge. We had a presentation by Chris Tisch, Membership Representative of the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), a lobbying organization representing the interests of small businesses and providing various programs for them. A number of attendees expressed interest in the NFIB and spoke to Chris after his presentation.

Immediately following our meeting we had a very productive working session on The Source List -- our project to assist members in marketing themselves to the major corporations in central New Jersey. Our next meeting, on December 20, will feature a full presentation of the directory and its associated web site, and will kick off the opportunity to get your company listed and further establish yourself as a corporate provider of consulting or other services. SHBN members will get a substantial discount on their listing in the directory, which will go out to over 6000 corporate decision-makers in the area.

Thanks to Bette Degenhardt, the facility's Director of Community Relations, and her staff for graciously hosting our meeting at their beautiful new facility and providing a gift basket door prize -- won by Elaine Smythe of the Serenity Center in Warren.

10/31/02 The Source List Builds Marketing Momentum for Member Companies

Our newest project is The Source List, a corporate sourcebook targeting purchasing managers and corporate executives at central New Jersey's large and mid-size corporations.Created by a consortium of 19 small, highly professional companies, dedicating to providing specialized, pre-qualified, competitive services to New Jersey's best corporations, the Directory and its associated web site will be distributed to over 6000 purchasing managers, middle-level executives, and decision-makers throughout Central New Jersey.

The Source List will provide a means for service providers throughout Central New Jersey to reach their targeted corporate audiences. Correspondingly, it enables corporations to identify local suppliers that can compete with national providers; to meet objectives for hiring women-owned, minority-owned, and veteran-owned businesses; and to identify competitive vendors in a number of fields.

The sourcebook will be accompanied by a full-service web site, featuring information on RFPs and RFQs, links to corporate portals, and other resources designed to enhance the ability of clients and suppliers to meet their goals.

As the economy turns around, corporations are likely to require more outsourcing to supplement internal resources; at the same time, the many new enterprises created by laid-off corporate workers have an immediate need for wider marketing and recognition.

Service providers can choose between basic and enhanced listings according to their interests and objectives. Corporations can also use the Directory to spell out purchasing policies and current strategic purchasing initiatives. Entries will be extensively cross-classified by areas of expertise.

The sourcebook and associated web site will also provide more efficient access to projects and information, and will thus be much more valuable than consumer media or yellow pages advertising. For more information, please visit www.njsourcelist.com.

9/17/02 Getting Back to Business
(Somerset Hills Living column, September 2002)

Reliving the events of September 11, 2001 brings back the shock, sadness, and anger of that day and the days that followed. While President Bush urged us to get back to "business as usual," we know that for many of us it is not, and will never be, "as usual." We need to get back to business, but with a new commitment, a new dedication to its underlying purpose, which is to create greater wealth and prosperity for entrepreneurs, employees, shareholders, and the community as a whole.

9/2/02 Member Feature: Turning Customer Complaints Into Benefits

by Joanne Fritz, Positive Impressions

No one likes to hear complaints -- especially customer complaints. Why? Because all too often mis-handled customer complaints result in lost customers. And lost customers turn into lost dollars, and have an adverse effect on the bottom line. On the average, it costs five times more to acquire a new customer, than to retain and grow an existing customer. In fact, studies have shown that a five percent increase in customer retention can lead to a twenty-five percent increase in profitability. So, who can really afford to lose a customer?

8/15/02 Feature Story: What Businesses Want

In the comedy What Women Want, advertising executive Mel Gibson miraculously begins to hear the private thoughts of the women around him. Initially he is shocked by their honesty and forthrightness -- and the low regard that they have for his shenanigans. But once he learns to listen and to mirror what they are thinking, there is almost nothing he can't accomplish.

7/29/02 Basking Ridge Country Club Meeting Another Success

We had another great turnout at the meeting (especially considering the number of people who notified us they would be on vacation) -- approximately 55 people in attendance. There were many members as well as a lot of new faces. From the minute people started arriving, they were mingling and networking -- all in all, there was a great buzz of activity in the meeting room.

6/21/02 Using the Media to Promote Your Business

The number one rule in using the media effectively is to have a clear message, one that conveys who you are and what you have to offer -- communicating your value, your difference in providing benefits to customers and clients.

Our network, for example, sees its goal as helping local companies, big and small, grow their businesses: by strengthening the relationships among members, getting their image across to prospective customers and clients, and increasing their level of technological and business sophistication. We do this through meetings, media contacts and giving them a greater online presence through this web site.
